“I’ve been involved with Reeman Dansie since 2005, working in the Collectors’ Sale. I have run the vintage textiles section, including clothes, since 2010. It’s a real joy to speak to customers about these items – they’ve all got such history.
Working with the Reeman Dansie team is very interesting, there is always something new to learn and items to research. I always like to try and make sense of the item I’m looking at by working out its history and origin. That’s what makes our job so special.
Over the years, there has been a change in the attitude to buying second hand items, especially with clothes and particularly among younger people. It’s fantastic to see younger people getting involved in auctions as previously very few were seen to attend, let alone buy. Wearing genuine vintage clothing allows people to create an incredibly glamorous look and they often end up with items that are totally unique.
My favourite piece that has come through the saleroom was a genuine 1920s flapper dress, where the silk underdress was virtually intact. It was such a glamorous and iconic item of clothing that perfectly captures that period of time in your imagination and of course it sold for a lot of money.
For me, the future of Reeman Dansie lies in the ethos of the company. While there are procedures to follow, individuality is allowed to flourish here. We all need creative flair to connect with our clients and communicate the importance of the items we sell. This means we have a very close team and a strong relationship with our customers.”
