Bernard Reynolds was born in Norwich and trained at the Norwich School of Art and the Westminster School of Art, whilst still a student, he met and exhibited with Henry Moore. During WWII he worked as a naval engineer, later utilising his working knowledge of engineering in his sculpture. He briefly studied at The East Anglia School of Painting and Drawing, where he met his wife Gwynneth Griffiths. He lectured at Sheffield College of Art, then in 1948, joined the staff of Ipswich Art School, where he taught 3D studies for the next 25 years, combining his teaching commitments with a prominent sculptural career. He was a founding member of the Norwich Twenty Group and Colchester Art Society. With multiple commissions for public works, particular in Ipswich, including metal sculpture, concrete reliefs and a large stained glass window. His ‘Ship Fountain’ at Civic Drive won the 1972 Sir Otto Beit sculptural award, awarded annually for the best piece of public sculpture in the British Commonwealth (excluding London).
Bernard Reynolds was a significant East Anglian sculptor and his work is highly collectable, works are currently scarce at auction.
