Doris Zinkeisen was born in Rosneath, Scotland, her younger sister, Anna Zinkeisen (1901-1976), was born three years later. Both sisters attended Harrow School of Art and both won scholarships to the Royal Academy Schools. The sisters shared a flat in London and together worked on murals for the liner Queen Mary. Doris was in demand for commercial and advertising illustration including a series of travel posters for various railways and the London Underground, she became a leading designer for theatre stage and costume. Her painting career included portraiture, landscape paintings and her trademark carriage scenes. In WWII she was an official war artist and painted Bergen-Belsen soon after it’s liberation in 1945. In 1966 Doris Zinkeisen moved with her twin daughters to Badingham, Suffolk and lived there until her death. In a long and distinguished career she became highly regarded for her accomplished technique and style. At auction her oil paintings are most frequently seen, usually on canvas, prices have been largely constant for some years, typically late hundreds to low thousands for her trademark parkland carriage scenes.
