Star lots in the sale include a group of oils by Lucy Harwood, a prominent figure in the Benton End school of artists whose significance has been reappraised in recent years. It is said that her work used to change hands at car boot sales and village fetes for a few pounds. Our sale features five oils with estimates ranging from £1500-3000. Another significant 20th century artist featured in the sale is Peggy Somerville. Peggy could paint proficiently aged just three, and was hailed a child genius at the tender age of ten when her first sell out auction was held in Mayfair. Peggy went on to have a long established artistic career but collectors are always drawn to her prodigious early talent and our sale includes a small oil from her second exhibition. Painted when she was just eleven, it has been in artist’s family ever since and comes to market for the first time since her 1929 Claridge Gallery Exhibition, estimate £800-1200. Another rare painting featuring in the sale is an 1842 portrait of Emma Sparrow, riding her hunter, Anachase, in the grounds of Gosfield Place, by 19th Colchester artist John Vine. Vine was born with severe disabilities and malformed arms and hands, he was exhibited as a fairground curiosity as a child but overcame his hardships to forge a successful career as a livestock artist, his work is scarce and always keenly contested at auction, this large canvas carries an estimate of £5000-7000. With the opportunity to acquire work by our region’s best artists and historic locations and depictions which may resonate with you, viewing this unique sale is highly recommended.
