Our renowned picture department is headed by Jonathan Benson and Daniel Wright, both highly experienced picture specialists, equipped with the knowledge and expertise to ably research and catalogue the diverse range of works which we encounter. Our sales invariably include works which encompass several centuries, a range of media and gamut of styles. Works of significance are included in our bi-monthly Fine Art auctions and twice a year these sales also feature specialist Sporting Art and East Anglian Art themes.
We are conscious of the value which attribution can add to paintings and are dedicated to ensuring all pictures are thoroughly researched prior to sale, this process often includes consultation with artist biographers and experts and our holistic approach includes special promotional advertising and editorial to ensure we can give an appropriate auction context to the most prestigious of works, we are also well placed to sell more modest works and are not hamstrung by the high minimum lot thresholds which constrict the London salerooms, meaning that we can offer a more comprehensive service to buyers and sellers alike. Pictures which fall below the value threshold of our Fine Art sales are included in our popular timed Fine and Affordable Art sales.
Recent auction highlights include the 2021 sale of Mary Beale’s profile portrait of her son Bartholomew which achieved a world record price for the artist of £100,000. Our 2018 sale of two large oils by Petrus Van Schendal totalled in excess of £50,000, and a Cedric Morris landscape from the artist’s estate which sold for £33,000. Prices which reflect Reeman Dansie’s reputation as a reliable specialist art seller. Our strong online presence results in significant levels of bidding from an International audience and promotes healthy competition for works in our sales. Our online strength was evidenced in 2017 when The Antiques Trade Gazette published statistics suggesting that Reeman Dansie received more weekly online registrations than any other U.K. auction house during four of our six Fine Art sale weeks.
Our specialists are regularly called upon to undertake valuations for insurance and such is our reputation that we count many of our region’s museums and institutions amongst our clients. We are particularly experienced when dealing with artists’ estates and have catalogued and sold several significant art collections in recent years.
